Prime Video is officially reopening the 'Stargate,' launching a brand-new chapter in the iconic sci-fi franchise. The Amazon-owned platform has greenlit a new series simply titled 'Stargate,' produced by Amazon MGM Studios—now the home of the franchise's rights. 

The project will be led by creator and showrunner Martin Gero, a longtime contributor to the 'Stargate' universe after working as a writer and producer across all three previous live-action series.

Martin Gero on the Franchise's Return 

Gero reflected on returning to the franchise, sharing that his early television career began with 'Stargate: Atlantis' and that the franchise shaped his understanding of storytelling and production. He expressed excitement about guiding the series into its next evolution and promised dedicated fans and newcomers alike an impressive new experience rooted in the spirit of the original universe.

The franchise's legacy stretches back to the 1994 feature film from Dean Devlin and Roland Emmerich, which inspired three hit series—'Stargate SG-1,' 'Stargate Atlantis,' and 'Stargate Universe.' It also spawned two direct-to-DVD films, an animated series, and a 2018 web project. This upcoming Prime Video series marks the franchise's first television return since 'Stargate' Universe ended in 2011.

While Prime Video is keeping story details top secret, the streamer describes the project as a bold new era for the 'Stargate' mythology. Behind the scenes, Gero will be joined by executive producers Joby Harold and Tory Tunnell of Safehouse Pictures, along with Devlin and Emmerich. Longtime architects Brad Wright and Joe Mallozzi will contribute as consulting producers, helping ensure the new instalment respects the franchise's established history.

Strong premium large-format ticket sales (IMAX, 3D, and Dolby) that accounted for roughly 59% of its domestic weekend revenue were important contributors to its success. Ahead of the crucial November–December film window, analysts see this debut as encouraging, demonstrating that popular genre releases can still attract audiences.

Why It Matters for the Franchise and Future Releases

When ‘The Terminator’ hit theatres in 1984, it wasn’t just another sci-fi action flick—it was the launch of a franchise, a cultural touchstone, and a breakthrough for its creator, James Cameron. What many don’t know is that the idea for the film didn’t come from a writing desk or a brainstorming session, but from a fevered dream Cameron had while he was sick and broke in Rome.

The Nightmare That Sparked a Legend

In 1981, James Cameron was working as a special effects director for Roger Corman’s low-budget production company. While filming ‘Piranha II: The Spawning’ in Italy, Cameron fell ill and experienced a vivid, terrifying dream. In it, he saw a chrome skeleton emerging from flames, dragging itself forward with knives in its hands.

This image—a relentless machine of death—was the seed that would eventually grow into ‘The Terminator’. Cameron sketched out the figure and began thinking of a story to surround it. He envisioned a cyborg assassin from the future sent back in time to kill, setting up the idea of a time-travel-driven thriller where humanity’s survival hinged on one woman and her unborn child.

Building a Story from a Single Image

Back in Los Angeles, Cameron began fleshing out the concept. Central to the plot was the idea of technological apocalypse—an AI called Skynet becoming self-aware and launching nuclear war to wipe out humanity.

But Cameron didn’t just want a futuristic war film. He wanted something leaner, more suspenseful. So he set most of the action in the present day, with the future only glimpsed in chilling flash-forwards. The idea of a soldier (Kyle Reese) sent back in time to protect Sarah Connor gave the story emotional weight and narrative urgency.

The Struggle to Get It Made

Cameron was an unproven director, and the studios weren’t interested in backing a dark sci-fi thriller from a first-timer. So he took a bold approach: he sold the script for ‘The Terminator’ to producer Gale Anne Hurd for just one dollar—with the condition that he would direct it.

With a budget of just $6.4 million, Cameron and Hurd assembled a team of practical effects wizards and worked with a rising star named Arnold Schwarzenegger, who brought the role of the Terminator to life with chilling physicality and few words. Cameron also cast Linda Hamilton as Sarah Connor and Michael Biehn as Kyle Reese—both unknowns at the time.

‘The Terminator’: A Vision Realized

Despite the low budget, Cameron’s fever-dream vision made it to the screen with stunning impact. The imagery—especially the endoskeleton Terminator walking through fire—remained largely faithful to what he’d first seen while sweating through illness in that Roman hotel room.

Just last week, Travis Scott arrived with his brand new track, 'Franchise' featuring fellow rappers: Young Thug and M.I.A. And just this week, the song's made its explosive landing at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100. 

For starters, 'Franchise' witnessed an interesting cocktail of production elements. With haunting melodies filling up the background and a strong set of beats lining the foreground - it created the perfect landing spot for their respective verses. The song also highlights Travis, Young Thug and M.I.A's distinctive rap styles, which is a real treat to the ears. 

Now, by claiming the throne at the No. 1 spot, this marks Scott's fourth run at the summit. It's also his third track to debut atop the Hot 100 charts in less than a year, setting a new record for the fastest accumulation of three No. 1 entrances by any artist in Hot 100 history. Scott's other No. 1 claims include ' Mode,' which stood tall at that coveted spot in December of 2018. Following this, 'Highest in the Room,' made it to the summit in October of 2019. And finally, 'The Scotts' featuring Travis and Kid Cudi took the crown in May of this year. 

 Meanwhile, Scott is just the fifth artist with at least three No. 1 Hot 100 debuts, joining Ariana Grande, who holds the record with four . 

Further, for Young Thug, he scores his second Hot 100 No. 1 claim while M.I.A. earns her first. 'Franchise' has also dominated the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs and Hot Rap Songs charts. It's a big victory for these two rappers in particular, as this is also their first No. 1 claim on these respective charts, too. 

And so, Travis Scott continues to create ripples with his fresh releases. The only question remaining is...will his 2020 tracks all find a space on an upcoming album?

2020 is looking brighter already because Travis Scott just arrived on the scene with his brand new tune, ‘Franchise’. Featuring fellow rap artists Young Thug and M.I.A, Travis manages to immerse you into his world from the get-go.

And so, in celebration of his new release, we figured we’d through some of his greatest hits under the microscope. We’re particularly looking at the songwriting charging these tracks and driving them forward. Travis has a way of transforming some of the grittiest experiences into the most poetic verses. Whether he tells a tale of love, youth or even politics, there’s a certain grandiosity that arrives with his songwriting. And yet, Travis doesn't shy away from pinning up his beliefs, anxieties, ideologies and more for the world to see. So, brace yourselves for a dip into all the different shades of Travis Scott.

Travis Scott Shows You The World With No Filter

Travis Scott is making his return to the music scene with a brand new treat for fans to lap up. He's got a new tune in the works, this one's titled, 'Franchise'. And it will mark Scott's first solo single of 2020. 

The rap star recently took to Instagram to break the news. He shared the cover art for the track, which leaves room for a lot of intrigue and much-needed deciphering. The artwork displays a Picasso-esque face, splattered with bright colours and mutated facial features. This piece was created by the contemporary American artist George Condo. The artist often works with warped designs, that say a lot from the first glance. 

Travis simply captioned his post, "FRANCHISE. Friday. Artwork". While the rapper hasn't put out any solo tunes this year, he's managed to nab some impressive collaboration. He tied up with Kid Cudi in April for their chart-topping hit, 'The Scotts'. Following this, he joined forces with Rosalia in May, for the dark, poignant track, 'TKN'. 

Not long after, in June, Travis tied up with Kanye West for ' Us In The Blood' . This tune created waves for its politically heavy themes, experimentative soundscape and also because it arrived bang in the middle of Kanye's election campaign. 

And more recently, Travis also put out 'The Plan' featuring the prolific Ludwig Goransson, for Christopher Nolan's 'Tenet'. Forged from a rattling bass line and warped melodies, this tune garnered a lot of praise, including some powerful words from Nolan himself. 

'Franchise' is set to make its descent on Friday, September 25th. Whether this will kick off a new era in music for Travis Scott, we'll just have to wait and see.
