At 4 a.m. on January 30th in Athens, Greece, artist, DJ, and experimental pop producer SOPHIE died at the untimely age of 34, following an accident.

The influential Scottish-born producer who shaped electronic music into bold and original avant-garde pop, was trying to access a vantage point to view the full moon, from where SOPHIE accidently slipped and fell.

A Radical Futurist

SOPHIE has proved repeatedly that music has the ability to speak our truth. The artist, who preferred not to use gendered or nonbinary pronouns, embodied the message that if we are true to ourselves, only then can we hope to live a meaningful life.

SOPHIE believed the idea that one’s path in life does not have to move on a predictive track and that identity is fluid. This fluidity is key to understanding the artist's work. The producer's catalogue consists of a string of hits produced for other artists, many collaborations, singles and one album.

The music combined creative pop instincts, experimental musical ideas, bold production, and a persona of someone mischievous, guileless, and very intelligent. SOPHIE'S body of work was essentially hopeful, and vulnerable, and showed us a glimpse into a better future.

SOPHIE was developing a new tonal language. In a 2012 interview with a well-known magazine, SOPHIE described that this music should offer “the same sort of high-thrill three-minute ride as a theme park roller coaster. Where it spins you upside down, dips you in water, flashes strobe lights at you, takes you on a slow incline to the peak, and then drops you vertically down a smokey tunnel, then stops with a jerk, and your hair is all messed up, and some people feel sick, and others are laughing—then you buy a key ring.”

When asked by a paper in 2018 about the difference between the artist’s own experience as a trans woman and the world’s grappling with the subject of gender, SOPHIE said; “It’s tradition. If you’re straight from the factory, your life should have a certain look and come with a certain short list of factors that you have to fulfill in your own way. But because of the body that you’re born into, it’s your obligation to satisfy as many of those as possible and that defines being successful.” 

In the following years, the artist abandoned invisibility and anonymity, appearing in person for the vibrant, revealing video for 'It’s Okay to Cry', which introduced the world to SOPHIE’s face and voice. Officially coming out as trans, SOPHIE faced accusations of appropriating womanhood.

Justin Bieber kicked off a brand new era in music with the saccharine sweet love song - 'Holy'. But, as he continues onward in that journey, he's turned the tables on us. The Canadian singer-songwriter teamed up with producer/ singer-songwriter, Benny Blanco for a brand new single titled, 'Lonely'. And, this ode to his lost childhood is brimming with vulnerability, grit and unfiltered emotion. 

A Gritty Ode to Lost Innocence

Justin teased the single earlier in the week, revealing the title of the track with a single picture - a picture of a boy in an empty room, dressed up in his My World tour outfit, sitting in front of a mirror. And, for fans and onlookers, that was enough of a hint that this was going to be a difficult track to get through. But, for non-fans, this is the perfect entry into Bieber's world - much talked about but not as recognised.

The track, as the title suggests, details loneliness and the paradox of having everything and nothing at the same time. Bieber reminisces in the chorus,

"What if you had it all but nobody to call?
Maybe then you'd know me
'Cause I've had everything
But no one's listening
And that's just fucking lonely"

The track, accompanied by an moving music video, features child actor Jacob Trembley. Complete with symbolism and subtlety, the visualiser pays homage to Bieber's lost childhood. Further, penned by Benny Blanco and produced by FINNEAS, the track rings true to the pair's past works, signature of the 'bad guy' producer.

A New Offering from Bieber

Speaking of the release, Justin Bieber wrote, "To be honest, it was hard to listen to [the song] considering how tough it was to get through some of these chapters." 

And, somehow, in the midst of all the noise surrounding Justin and his stardom, 'Lonely' offers up something real from the star, for what seems like the first time in a while. The track is out now, and available on all streaming platforms.

It's been a good few weeks since Justin Bieber made his landing with the sugary sweet ' featuring Chance the Rapper. After a string of cryptic teasers, the tune finally made its landing with an accompanying short film on September 18th. Invariably, 'Holy' kickstarted a new era in music for Bieber. 

And now, it looks like Justin's got a fiery new collaboration up his sleeve. This time around, he's teaming up with Benny Blanco for a fresh track titled, 'Lonely'. 

Bieber took to Instagram to break the news. He shared a charming photo of what appears to be a younger version of himself, complete with his fluffy blonde bangs and classic purple hoodie. 

Little Bieber is sitting in a large dressing room, a vase full of white roses and other items lay on the counter before him. The star simply captioned the post with, '#Lonely with @itsbennyblanco Friday'. Sources say that the actor chosen to play a young Justin will be Jacob Tremblay. The 14 year old actor is best known for his standout performance in 2015's 'Room,' 2017's 'Wonder,' and 2019's 'Doctor Sleep'.

Interestingly, Blanco has worked with Bieber in the past, helping him craft the chart-topping hit, 'Love Yourself'. The track found its space on the singer's 2015 album, "Purpose". On the US Billboard Hot 100 and the UK Singles Chart, the song became Bieber's third consecutive number-one. It also earned Bieber his first number one on the Adult Contemporary chart. 'Love Yourself' even went on to score two Grammy nominations for Song of the Year and Best Pop Solo Performance. 

So, will their new track, 'Lonely' take the same route? We'll find out this Friday, October 16th.
